Apple’s Clean Energy charging Could Be The Future Of Electronics.
Announced with iOS 16 and introduced in the US last fall, Clean Energy Charging selectively charges your device when lower carbon-emission electricity is available. In some regions, this might be during the daytime when solar and renewable energy production peaks, but in most cases, it will be at night.
To support the feature, your iPhone gets a forecast of carbon emissions on your local energy grid. It then charges the device when the cleanest energy is available.
The effect is to reduce demand at peak times and to increase the use of renewable energy at those times when it is available, or demand is low. It matters because 22% of Apple’s gross carbon footprint is generated from device charging.

UK Offers £205m To Renewable Energy Projects.
The UK government has committed to boosting its clean energy sector with a £205 million budget for the latest round of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme.
The government’s flagship mechanism has already supported almost 27GW of low-carbon electricity generation projects and the fifth allocation round is expected to further encourage green industries and jobs.
The budget includes £170 million for established technologies such as offshore wind, as well as a £10 million allocation for tidal stream technologies, aimed at unlocking a tidal power industry in the UK.
Graham Stuart, the Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, has emphasized the importance of the CfD scheme in delivering clean, domestic energy and promoting green industries and jobs.
Mr. Stuart said: “Today’s budget announcement, the move to annual auctions, and continued investment in renewable energy will limit the impact of events like Putin’s war in Ukraine and drive our overriding priority for the UK to have amongst the cheapest wholesale electricity prices in Europe. European Union countries have agreed to push for the global phaseout of fossil fuels at COP28. It is part of the bloc’s promise to support and accelerate the energy transition ahead of the climate summit in Dubai this November. Faced with climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and the fallout of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the EU says that our dependence on fossil fuels leaves us vulnerable. Link.
A year ago four Bengal tigers were found trapped in a train carriage on a farm in Argentina, where they had been living for 15 years. The two eldest animals had been left behind by a circus that no longer deemed them worthy of performing. The family of four were rescued and transported to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa last year and is now on the road to recovery. Link.
Electric ferries and vehicles could soon be charged wirelessly after an exciting technological breakthrough. Until now, inductive charging - where there’s no contact between the device and conductor - has been unable to deliver the high power that electric vehicle batteries need. The method has only worked for small devices, like electric toothbrushes and some mobile phones. But new components have enabled scientists at a Swedish university to show that the recharging of urban ferries and city buses is possible without human or robotic hands. Link.
